Brazilian Serie A Week 28

Vasco stumble as Corinthians reclaim the summit.

A summary 3-0 thrashing at Internacional halted Vasco works as they finally lost a game after an excellent run of form and fall off the summit. Their defeat in Porto Allegre was just their second in 13 games and it allows Corinthians, who led the league through most of June and July, to take over.

Argentine playmaker Andres D'Alessandro, Indio and Tinga scored the goals for the 2011 Recopa Sudamericana winners as they continue to remain at large, possible dark horses for the league title. They remain in seventh with 43 points, just seven behind Vasco in second with 50. On 51 points and back in front are Corinthians, who polished off visiting At Go in a 3-0 win of their own. Leandro Castan scored an early goal before Willian and Alex added further markers towards the end of half time.

Avai was another 3-0 winner seeing At Para at home with goals from Lincoln, Gian and a penatly from Rafael Coelho on the stroke of half time. Avai are now just two points behind At Para in 19th while At Go drop to 12th. Manoel was dismissed just after half time for the visitors, becoming one of six players dimissed this round.

Two of the unlucky sextet were Figueirense pair Maicon and Bruno Vieira, who saw red for second yellow cards just after the hour in their game at Ceara. Juninho Barbosa had given the visitors the lead before Washington scored again for Ceara. With 20 minutes against nine men, the club from the northern outpost of Fortaleza had a great chance to pick up a win but with the point remain in 15th.

Flamengo won their third game on the trot with another entertaining 3-2 win over Fluminense in Sunday's big Fla-Flu derby. Rafael Sobis and Manuel Lanzini had twice given the visitors at Joao Havelange the lead, only for Thiago Neves and a Diego Cavalieri own goals to peg them back. Flamengo have been potent in close games and it proved once again as Dario Botinelli scored an injury time winner after Souza had been dismissed for Flu.

Also on Sunday, Santos bounced back from their midweek loss at Gremio with a 75th minute winner from Borges to defeat Palmeiras. After a great that had seen them climb back up the table, Santos had lost three in a row, culminating in their tepid loss in the catch up game on Wednesday. But they shook of that disappointment with a good win over the giants from Sao Paulo to move back up to 11th. Palmeiras season has just gone from bad to worse after a good start. Once second, and for a large part of the early season in third, Palmeiras have noe dropped to ninth with just one win in their last five games.

Saturday saw three games with Botafogo losing some more steam from their title challenge with a 2-2 draw at home to Bahia - Souza's double for the visitors from Salvador sandwiching strikes from Alex and Caio. Botafogo drop to fifth with just one point from their last three games and one win in fve. Helder was dismissed early for Bahia. Coritiba continued their solid season with a 2-0 win over Gremio. Marcos Aurelio and Jeci gave them the points over the Porto Allegre heavyweights and the promoted club from Curitiba are now ninth. The Mineiro derby between Atletico and America finished goalless.

Also on Wednesday was an early game from this round as Cruzeiro and Sao Paulo drew 3-3.  Keirrison, Charles and Anselmo Ramon scored for Cruzeiro while Cicero, Dagoberto and Juan replied for Sao Paulo. Poor Denilson, on loan from Arsenal, picked up his second red card of the season in injury time. Sao Paulo and Flamengo are tied on points with 47, in second and third respectively.

Borges now has 20 goals for the season, ahead of Ronaldinho and Leandro Damiao who have 13 each.
