Brazilian Serie A Week 27

Vasco and Corinthians are the big winners.

Despite only drawing 2-2 in their top of the table clash, losses suffered by 3rd placed Sao Paulo and 4th placed Botafogo, ensured the leading duo remain clear of the scrap below them in the table.

Sunday's big game saw the two title contenders go head to head and deliver just as the occasion demanded. Defender Dede, fresh off his national team call-ups for Brazil in their home and away matches against Argentina, got things started for Vasco, only for Alex to level things on 21 minutes. While Fagner then scored a goal at the start of the second half, midfielder Danilo returned the favour in the 67th minute to ensure that the game finished all square. With the point, Vasco improve to 50 points, two clear of Corinthians, who are on 48.

Sao Paulo suffered a crucial loss and failed in their quest to capitalize on the draw, as they lost 2-1 to visiting Flamengo. Goals from Thiago Neves and Renato Abreu came either side of a strike from Dagoberto for the home side. Flamengo remain sixth but are now on 44 points, just two behind Sao Paulo. In a similar theme, Botafogo lost 2-0 at At Go (Felipe scoring a double) and remain in fourth on 45 points.

Fifth place is taken up by Fluminense who are mounting a furious resurgence to defend their title. The champions from Rio played out a thriller, beating Santos, 3-2 at home on Saturday's big game. After Neymar had put the visiting team up Fluminense hit back with goals from Marquinho and Rafael Sobis. Santos then levelled through Wason Renteria in the 89th minute before, waitforit Mario Rozario scored the winner for the home side in injury time. Santos drop back out of the top half after their second loss in a row.

Earlier on Saturday Palmeiras, with Marcos Assuncao had been held at home to a 1-1 draw by visiting America, who scored through Kempes. the latter now has nine goals, almost all scored in his last seven games. Bahia, with a double from Junior Pipoca and a late goal from Lulinha, saw off visiting Avai, 3-2. Avai got on the scoresheet through Pedro Ken and an own goal from Pipoca.

Atletico Mineiro drew 1-1 with Ceara as Carlos Cesar and Leandro Chaves cancelled each other out. Michel and Joao Marcos had been dismissed for the visitors who defended doggedly for more almost 40 minutes with nine men.

Gremio won a rare game, beating Cruzeiro 2-0 at home with goals from Damian Escudero and Rafael Marques while Figueirense and Coritiba drew goalless. Internacional, Palmeiras, At Go and Coritiba round out the top ten, separated by only three points.
