Brazilian Serie A Week 8 Preview

With the Copa America kicking off on Friday, Serie A Weeks 8 -11 are played out in the shadow of the continental championships.

Week 8 sees games played over this week with 9 games spread over Wednesday and Thursday.  Santos's game with Fluminense has been postponed to Aug 24 2011.

Wednesday sees a packed schedule with six games:

- Internacional, on a two game winning streak host bottom side Atl Para.  Expect Oscar and Leandro Damiao to load up goals in what should be a thumping home win.

- Cruzeiro host Gremio.  Although Gremio are a tough team to break down, they've won one and lost two games on their travels, while Cruzeiro scored an impressive away win in the previous round.  Should finish as a home win but if Wallyson gets going, finally, Cruzeiro might squeak out a win.

- Avai host Bahia in a game that will see the side from Salvador maintain their three game away winning streak.  Avai have the worst defence in the league.

- Leaders Corinthians host Vasco Da Gama in what should be a cracker - Liedson and Willian v Bernardo and Alecsandro.  Home win.

- Ceara take on Atletico Mineiro in a game that sees the visitors finally get back on the winning track.  However the long arduous trip to the Northern outpost of Fortaleza may take its toll on Mancini and co.

- Flamengo host Sao Paulo in the tie of the round.  Sao Paulo are on a losing streak while Flamengo are on a winning run and are still unbeaten over the season.  Casemiro, Wellington and Dagoberto versus Deivid and Ronaldinho.  Draw.

Thursday has three games:

- Botafogo host Atl Go.  Elkeson should fill his boots.  Botafogo are fourth and Atl Go are 15th.

- Coritiba versus Figueirense in a game that will finish as a draw.  Anderson Aquino hasn't scored since his hat trick earlier in the season while Aloisio's side are flying high in fifth but have only scored nine goals in seven games.  He has chipped in with three of them.

- Palmeiras travel to America Mineiro and should pick a good road win for all three points.  However, America have picked up all their four points at home.  Kleber and Luan take on Alessandro.

Trivia Alert:  Former national team defender and South Africa coach Joel Santana is the coach of Cruzeiro.  He is one of the few managers to have won the Rio State Championship, Campeonato Carioca, with each of the four big Rio clubs - Vasco, Flamengo, Fluminense and Botafogo.
