Brazilian Serie A Week 33

Only five games remain.

And it appears no one wants to win. In Week 33, both the leaders, three of the top four and five of the top eight all lost. In fact Corinthians only move back above Vasco into top spot, on goal difference, by virtue of a smaller losing margin.

Corinthians lost 2-1 at America Mineiro, the worst team in the league as Chicao's penalty at the start of the second half was not enough with America scoring through Fabio Junior and Amaral. Vasco however fell 2-0 at Santos with Neymar and league leading scorer Borges doing the damage. With the two goal defeat Vasco slip to second.

Elsewhere, Botafogo lost again, at home to Figueirense, 1-0 with Julio Cesar scoring the winner early, while Flamengo were big winners smashing Cruzeiro 5-1 at home as Thiago Neves scored a treble to follow Deivid's brace. Cruzeiro, who are now in the relegation zone, actually took the lead through Anselmo Ramon. Sao Paulo played a humdinger, losing 4-3 at Bahia while Internacional lost a crucial game 2-1 to Fluminense at home. The Rafael's Sobis and Moura, both scored for the visitors while Oscar replied for the hosts.

Atletico Mineiro's revival continued with their third straight win, beating Gremio 2-0 with goals from Andre and Marquinhos. Avai lost 2-1 to Ceara at home to remain the in bottom two, just a point above America. In the Para-Goia Atletico game, the hosts won 2-1 with a double from Federico Nieto but remain in the bottom four. Finally, Palmeiras' slide continues as they lost 2-0 to Coritiba at home with goals from Davi and Leonardo

Sao Paulo is the lowest team that cannot get relegated, mathematically. Meanwhile, At Go is the highest ranked team that cannot win the title any more. Borges now has 23 goals for the season.

Stay tuned for an analysis of the run in.
