Dad gets in on the act of blogging

Datta Sr. Checks in with a blog posting of his own

Several weeks ago, my father went to watch a football match between two amateur 5 a side teams drawn from the coworkers at his company AMEC.  The game was played in Mississauga, Ontario and as the following report reveals, contained plenty of action and a healthy dose of humour:

Last night I took a little time off from my regular schedule as I was about to take a flight to Adelaide to cover the second Ashes test match between Australia and England.  Instead, I drove to see the season opening soccer match between the mighty Blue Giants and the delicate White Cows.  The match took place in a stadium which is a shade smaller than the one where the recent 2010 World Cup final was staged.  I wouldn’t regret my decision as I was in for a real encounter I had no idea about.

Although the result showed otherwise, it was a match filled with tense moments, exquisite ball control, intelligent movement and outstanding crosses, backed up by the speed of a panther, not to mention, the booming shots directed into the goal mouths on either side.  Poor Jorge (The White Cows 'keeper) had to take a fair share of those shots on his body by the relentless Blue Giants; through the wily winger Hajir and the tireless midfielder sweeper Nikki.  White Cows had their moments too, but it was the impregnable Chinese wall, consolidated by the Rock of Gibraltar in front, as Rory and Faiz stood in the defence.  Lined up in such a way, I guess the White Cows didn’t have the right arsenal to penetrate such an awesome citadel, so they had nothing to do but resort to some long distance shooting, where Matvey showed glimpses of his skill of yesteryear, as did Gualberto and David.  At times the proceedings were such that they brought the entire 1000 odd crowd to its feet, supporting their own favourite players.  Overall it was simply amazing.

Towards the end it was Faiz’s turn to show his skill when his bicycle kick went begging as the goal post wasn’t quite in the right place. The referee Tony handled the match well, as usual, with strict discipline and control.  A few yellow cards and a couple of red cards were issued, but the players with red cards issued against them didn’t leave the field as there was no way out.  Tony did show why he is a FIFA panel referee.  Hope to be at the next match.
